Making a char siu recipe at home just got even simpler thanks to this air fryer cooking technique.

 

By making char siu in the air fryer, you cut down on cooking time while still getting all of the flavors that make char siu iconic. That's thanks to the Lee Kum Kee Char Siu Sauce at the heart of the marinade, which adds all the sweet and savory flavors char siu pork is known for. 

 

You can also do this recipe with chicken, but pork is the typical protein of choice. We used this air fryer char siu pork to top a poutine recipe that's also worth checking out for a fun twist on a classic Canadian favorite!

How to make it

  1. Combine all marinade ingredients in a bowl. Remove 2 Tbsp. of the combined mixture and combine with honey and water, and set aside in a separate container for your Honey Glaze.
  2. Place pork in a ziploc bag or bowl and coat with the marinade, brushing to ensure even distribution. Refrigerate and marinate for at least 6 hours, or up to overnight.
  3. After marinating, remove pork from fridge and let rest until it reaches room temperature. Preheat an air fryer at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) for 5 minutes and lightly spray the inside basket with cooking oil spray. Add marinated pork without overcrowding and cooking for 15 minutes, turning over once.
  4. Brush the pork with the Honey Glaze and return to the air fryer, now set to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius) and cook for another 5-7 minutes. The pork should be caramelized and lightly charred, and internal temperature should reach 145-160 degrees F.
  5. Let rest before slicing and serve! Use across other char siu sauce recipes like the Char Siu Poutine.
